After reading Walter Cronkite’s words in your story, I took a deep breath and felt an intense sadness for our nation. We can only hope that things will get better.

Thank you, Peggy. It's been a rough decade for journalists, and I appreciate your hopes for the future. It will be a relief to see 2024 in the rear view mirror. Happy New Year.

I'm just discovering your post now - a comfort even now as much as the day after. I love your insights about the shared community of a nation, and the "never combative or self-indulgent" nature of news in what seems like a terribly distant past. I'm so hoping the next generation of journalists have your (and Cronkite's) independent, intelligent sensibility.

Thank you for reminding us of the words Walter Cronkite spoke after the assassination of JFK. So true again today.

I know. And I miss the community that happened because of that shared information.

I have longed for Cronkite or Huntley and Brinkley. At least then are debates based on a common set of "facts," not fake news and each person's latest tweet or FB posting.
